Prince of Tides DVD in Stores November 6
Posted/Updated: 30 August 2003 14:18
Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment continues its fall series of Barbra Streisand film releases on DVD with The Prince of Tides on November 6, 2001. CTHE has made its official release announcement, and the details are provided below, along with my review. Certainly, the definitive collector's version for the past few years has been the now out-of-print The Criterion Collection: The Prince of Tides double laserdisc set, which includes an excellent running audio commentary by the film's director, producer, and star, Barbra Streisand. However, this invaluable audio supplement will not be included on the CTHE DVD. We look forward to the forthcoming first DVD for the film itself, which is the most important aspect of the project, of course. Hopefully, the future will bring us an additional Tides DVD set including Barbra's commentary and many of the Criterion laserdisc's unique bonus features, which will ultimately be lost if they don't move to the new technology.
Many online DVD retailers are taking advance orders. On the actual disc the main menu screen shot below is much brighter.

DVD Region Code: 1Review: As part of CTHE's threesome of Barbra Streisand DVD premieres this holiday season, all films set in New York, The Prince of Tides is the only film directed by Streisand, and it looks wonderful on DVD. Of course, a widescreen presentation is the only way to view a film at home, and this visual feast is strikingly delivered, from the shimmering South Carolina coastal waters to the bright lights of the big city. Only a basic 2-channel Dolby Surround audio mix here, yet it serves to make the intimate story more cozy in your living room. Two pages of production notes quote generously from novelist Pat Conroy on Streisand's efforts to bring his epic story to the screen. The original teaser and theatrical trailers are included in full-screen format. As stated above, additional Prince of Tides material needs to be released on DVD via the Criterion Collection or migrated to a subsequent CTHE special edition. A film as cherished and honored as this one certainly deserves a definitive deluxe DVD release. Nevertheless, for those who value a great film over everything else, this disc certainly provides a beautiful print and transfer of The Prince of Tides. You may now put your VHS copies aside and see this movie the way it's meant to be seen. - MJI, 10/20/01
